What is a Romantasy short story?

A Romantasy short story blends elements of both romance and fantasy. Your story should include a strong romantic arc set within a fantasy world, which could include magic, mythical creatures, supernatural beings, or other fantasy elements

Is Happily Ever After required?

Nope!

Is there a specific romance trope I have to use?

No, you can choose any romance trope (e.g., enemies to lovers, forbidden love, second-chance romance) as long as the fantasy element is also prominent.

Can my story have dark themes?

Yes, but be mindful of content warnings if your story includes sensitive topics. Make sure the romance remains a central element and that any dark themes contribute to character development.

Is there a required spice level for the romance?

The challenge is open to all romance spice levels, from sweet to steamy to down right filthy!

prompts

Can I interpret the prompts loosely?

You have creative freedom, but each prompt should be clearly recognizable in the story. If readers can’t identify the required elements, the story may not qualify.

Can the prompts be part of a subplot?

Yes! The prompts don’t all have to be in the main storyline, but they should still play an important role in character development or plot progression.

What makes a hobby "uncharacteristic"?

The hobby should contrast with the character's usual personality or role in an interesting way. Examples include:

  • A warrior who secretly knits enchanted scarves

  • A brooding vampire who writes romantic poetry

Can the uncharacteristic hobby be a profession?

For this challenge, a profession would not count as a hobby.

Does the recurring memory have to be negative?

Nope! As long as it’s recurring, it doesn’t matter what exactly the memory is. It can be happy, sad, frightening, etc.

Does a recurring dream count as a recurring memory?

No. In the case of these prompts, a recurring dream is not the same as a recurring memory. A recurring memory is something that has been experienced by the character and is recalled multiple times.

Does a vision of the future count as a recurring memory?

These prompts can be interpreted loosely, however a vision of the future would not count as a recurring memory as a memory would be something from the past.

Can the recurring memory be more than one memory?

As long as there is something about the memory that is the same each time, such as a memory that we get more details of each time, it would count. You can build on one memory, but they cannot be completely different.

Does it matter how the prompts are included?

You have creative freedom with how you choose to integrate the prompts, however they should flow within the story. Points may be deducted if they don’t fit or feel "thrown in” in order to meet a requirement.
